Madeleine Kelly

About the Artist

Madeleine Kelly is well known for her figurative paintings that assemble information gleaned from the fields of archaeology and the sciences. Her works convey an ecological awareness with a stroke of magic realism. The finished paintings present a complex realm where references from mythology, politics and art history intersect with the artist’s concern for the environment.

Winner of the 2018 Sunshine Coast Art Prize and 2004 Churchie Emerging Art Exhibition, Kelly has been included in national and international exhibitions including ‘Sedimente’, Spinnerei Werkschau, Leipzig, Germany (2018); ‘Chromophilia’, Wollongong City Gallery, NSW (2017); ‘Paradigma Blickwechsel (Paradigm Exchanging Glances)’, Tapetenwerk, Leipzig (2017); ‘Sea of Waste’, Shoalhaven Regional Gallery (2017); ‘Scenes of our City’, Museum of Brisbane, Brisbane (2007); ‘Contemporary Still Life’, Casula Powerhouse (2007); ‘Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award’ (2017); ‘Fisher’s Ghost Art Award’ Campbelltown Arts Centre, Campbelltown NSW (2016); ‘The Waiting Room’, Artbank, Sydney (2016); ‘64th Blake Prize’, Casula Powerhouse, NSW (2016); ‘GOMA Q: Contemporary Queensland Art’, QAG|GOMA (2015); ‘Crane Arts Philadelphia’, Philadelphia (2011); ‘Ten Years of Contemporary Art: The James C Sourris AM Collection’, QAG|GOMA (2011); and ‘Primavera 2005: Young Australian Artists’, Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Sydney.

About the Artwork

Me and my Rhythm Box is from Kelly’s 2018 exhibition Spin out, spun in which expanded her painting practice into the kinetic field, exploring the aesthetic potential of circles, light and colour in relation to entropy.
