Christopher Bassi

About the Artist

Christopher Bassi’s paintings weave together multiple narratives that conjure the complexity of contemporary transcultural experiences. Subverting archetypical models of representation his work draws on art history, politics, and personal references. Reflecting on his mixed Meriam and Yupungathi people from the Torres Strait and Cape York along with British heritages as a point of departure, his work explores the entangling of social and cultural identities and aims to test the limits of Painting to act as an imaginative space and tool for locating oneself in the world.

Christopher Bassi graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Art. His first solo show ‘Documents of Distance’ was held at Stable Art Space (2018). Selected group exhibitions include ‘Placement: Monica Correa and Christopher Bassi’, Spiro Grace (2017), ‘Futureproof’, Boxcopy (2018), ‘Cross-mending’, Outerspace Ari (2018), and BEAUT Festival, Outerspace Ari (2019). He has been selected for 15 Artists at Redcliffe Regional Gallery in 2019. His work is held in a number of private collections as well as The Museum of Brisbane.

Venue Snapshot

The Happy Cabin is a clothing boutique selling men's and women's apparel.

In the 1950s this was the premises of P Mee Lee, Quality Furniture, (phone J-2900, at Tram Stop 8). It later became Webb’s Auto Electrical, Generator and Starter Repairs, with the new style phone number of 4-5073, much easier to remember than today’s mobile numbers. The original residence behind the shopfront business is still visible from across the street.
